is it easier to get an athletic scholarship or academic scholarship? which is easier and why? im both very athletic and play in a rep hockey team and very smart avg, 89.6 with lots of community service I luv: If you're honestly hoping to earn an athletic scholarship, you really need to be playing on one or more of your high school varsity teams - most likely from a large high school program. If you're athletic scholarship "material", you would certainly know it by now, because you would have been "scouted" by college coaches who travel around the country checking out the most talented high school players. They're not shy about introducing themselves to you - if you have the skills they're looking for, they'll be sure to provide you with a real sales pitch for their athletic program. Colleges don't "scout" academic scholars (generally not, anyway). They'll find out that you're a top student when you apply for admission, because they'll receive a copy of your high school transcript, and they'll receive recommendations from your teachers and maybe your principal. If you're amongst the best students who have applied to that school, you may well be offered a scholarship - that's an enticement to get you to enroll with them. Sometimes, though, you will actually hear from a college that already knows that you're an academic whiz - particularly if your score highly on the PSAT, the SAT or the ACT. Colleges do get lists of the top scorers, and they will directly contact students who they hope to attract. Honestly - if you're not a local athletic star - you're not going to be offered a athletic scholarship - those are only offered to the student athletes that a school is hoping to recruit to play for its intercollegiate sports teams. As I said - if your reputation is such that you compete at that level, you would already have been contacted by many college coaches and staff. I suspect that your focus will be on the academic scholarship side. There are many, many of these available - but keep in mind that most awards are in the $500-$2500 range - not the "full ride scholarships" that many students dream of. Good luck to you!
