The Joys Of Betting On Sports
There are many things that one can bet on. Indeed, anything in which there can be more than one outcome can be betted on. Yet for many years, we have seen a consistently high number of people opting to bet on sports; the existence of so many other things that can be betted on notwithstanding. At this very moment, as you read this, chances are that there are thousands, possibly even millions, of people in the world who have placed their bets on various horseracing, boxing, soccer, tennis, wrestling and even hockey sporting events. So what is it that makes people so keen about betting on sports? Why can't they bet on other things – some of which seem to be more unpredictable (and therefore potentially more exciting, from a betting point of view) than sporting events?
Well, it would seem that the reason as to why so many people are so keen on sports betting has something to do with the unique ‘joys of betting on sports.'
Incidentally, when we talk about betting on sports, all we are looking at are the situations where, before a certain sports event commences, people make various predictions on it, and back those predictions with money. Under this arrangement, then, if their predictions turn out to be true, they win money. And if their predictions turn out to be untrue, they lose the money they will have put down.
Now one of the unique joys of betting on sports, arguably the biggest one, is that whatever way the bet goes, one still ends up with what comes across as a win-win situation. If one's prediction comes true, there is a double joy: the joy of your preferred team winning, and the joy of your winning the money from those who will have betted the opposite way. If one's prediction doesn't come true, one will still have enjoyed the thrill of the game, even if they lose the money in the bet.
Incidentally, the enjoyment of a game becomes greater if you have higher stakes in it (like if you have put money on its outcome), than if you are just a passive spectator. When you have some money in the game, you find yourself getting very deeply drawn into it, knowing full well that in the event of it going either way, you could end up so much richer, or so poorer. You find your adrenaline levels fluctuating wildly with every move in this game, in which you have a real stake. Indeed, the reason many people go about betting on sports is not in search of the money they stand to win through the bets per se; but more in search of the heightened thrill.
One of the reasons people take part in games – either as spectators or as players - is in a bid to ‘stress themselves up' a little bit, and thus rid themselves of boredom. The greater the thrill in the game (where the thrill manifests through the suspense and acknowledgement of the stakes), the more ‘pleasantly stressed' up one becomes during its course, and the higher the overall enjoyment of it. Thus ways through which one can increase this thrills are worked out. One of those is, of course, by raising one's stakes in the game; which is what we achieve when betting on sports.
