A cake in the shape of a SKULL? I need to make a cake in the shape of a skull. For a pirate them. Any suggestions on how to make the cake? Also, what flavors should I use. I'm trying to stay away from Red Velvet. Need Cake and Filing ideas. Make the main part of the cake in a metal oven-safe bowl to get the round shape you need, then bake a smaller 9x9 cake and carve out the teeth, bones, etc that you may need. If you are really good at icing it chocolate cakes with cherry or raspberry filling are always nice, but remember the dark of the chocolate might shine through the icing unless it's thick. Vanilla cakes are quite good too, you can use a lemon filling, or you can fill any type of cake with pudding or mousse. Remember to tint the icing a slightly grey color cuz skulls aren't perfectly white, and you can carve out the eye holes too. Hope that helps, good luck!!
