The color ink is not incompatible, the chip on the cartridge is. To refill Epson cartridges you must reset the chip on the cartridge. Chip resetter's are available from many places online and are fairly inexpensive.

My suggestion is to simply use what are called "compatible" or now since the lawsuit, "remanufactured" Espon cartridges. These are ready-to-go right out of the box and you don't have to worry about resetting the chip or getting ink all over yourself when you try to put ink in it with the refill.
